Classics Club Spin 2 Book List

classicsclub

The Classics Club is hosting another Classics Club Spin and this time I’m going to participate. What’s a Classics Club Spin you ask? Well here’s the info from their site:

  • Go to your blog.
  • Pick twenty books that you’ve got left to read from your Classics Club List.
  • Try to challenge yourself: list five you are dreading/hesitant to read, five you can’t WAIT to read, five you are neutral about, and five free choice (favorite author, rereads, ancients β€” whatever you choose.)
  • Post that list, numbered 1-20, on your blog by next Monday.
  • Monday morning, we’ll announce a number from 1-20. Go to the list of twenty books you posted, and select the book that corresponds to the number we announce.
  • The challenge is to read that book by July 1, even if it’s an icky one you dread reading! (No fair not listing any scary ones!)

I’ve got a lot left to choose from my original Classics Club goals list so here’s my Spin list:

1. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
2. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
3. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Doal
4. For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway
5. Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo
6. Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
7. Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne
8. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
10. Rebecca by Daphne deMaurnier
11. Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
12. Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin
13. The Inferno by Dante Aligheri

16. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
17. Emma by Jane Austen
18. King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table by Thomas Malory
19. The Iliad by Homer
20. An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde

There you have it, I’ll reveal which book is selected when we learn on Monday, May 20th what the Spin number is. Wish me luck!

Have you read any of the books on my spin list? What did you think of them? Can you guess which ones I’m dreading or excited to read? Let me know what classics are your favorites or you dread reading and as always, happy reading!

  1. This is such a great list! Many of these are books I have been wanting to read as well. I look forward to your review on Robinson Crusoe.

  2. I read Their Eyes Were Watching God for the sync read at the club last month. I loved it and as time goes by I think I love it even more. It will definitely get reread at some point in the future πŸ™‚
    Good luck

  3. I’ve always wanted to read Rebecca though it is not on my original list. I would love to get a copy and read even outside the list. Hope your lucky number came up. My no. 6 was Pride and Prejudice and I can’t complain

  4. Fantastic list. I adore Victor Hugo, JK Rowling and Rudyard Kipling. I hope you will get one of these authors! πŸ™‚

  5. Oh, you have some great books listed! I loved “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “A Wrinkle in Time.” Have fun with your spin!

  6. What a great list! I love how you added some children’s books. The Handmaid’s Tale and The Iliad are on my list too. Happy reading!

  7. So many excellent books, so many possibilities. I recently finished Frankenstein, which was an interesting book and a bit different from what I expected. I also read The Inferno earlier this year–actually I listened to it. I also listened to a Great Courses series on it and a bio of Dante as I needed the context to appreciate the work. Emma is one of my favorite Austens–everytime I read it, I enjoy it more!

    Happy spinning!

  8. WOW, I’ve never thought of Harry Potter as a classic!! What an idea!! πŸ˜‰
I have to read The handmaid’s tale too, even though it isn’t in my list, but a lot of people love this book.
    Good luck!

  9. What a wonderfully diverse list of books. my picks would be 1 and 10, but I hope you fall in love with whichever book comes up.

The Count of Monte Cristo is on my list too, and I do like the look of it, it’s just so very long…

  10. You have a great variety on your list. I have so many fond memories of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from my childhood and from reading it to my kids. I loved Rebecca, and The Count of Monte Cristo! Good luck!

  11. To answer your question I’ve read seven of these (2, 4, 8, 9, 11, 12, 19). I just recently read the Handmaid’s Tale and liked it. Also really enjoyed Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Autobiography of Ben Franklin. I stumbled upon a 1944 edition of Franklin a few years ago at the library and loved the illustrations in it. Here’s a link to the post I wrote if you want to check them out http://wildmoobooks.blogspot.com/2010/04/autobiography-of-benjamin-franklin.html. Good luck with the spin! I wonder if you’re dreading The Illiad and The Count of Monte Christo?

  12. What a great list ! The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and For Whom the Bell Tolls are on my favorite ever list ! Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is absolutely delicious so is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Robinson Crusoe and Around the World in 80 days are amazing too…great teenage memories there !
Good luck with the spin, I’m quite sure you’ll have a great time with any book that will be chosen πŸ™‚

  13. Ah, we have 3 books in common: Jungle Book, Inferno and An Ideal Husband. I’m very excited to read Inferno, I think if it doesn’t pop up in the spin, I’d read it next month anyway.

The Count of Monte Cristo is very entertaining, while Robinson Crusoe is more difficult with the language, but I admire Crusoe’s struggle to find God here.

Good luck with the spin then… By the way, which number do you secretly want to pop up in the spin? πŸ˜‰

  14. Great variety on your list. I have Emma on mine too. Good luck with the spin and I hope you will love the book it chooses for you.

  15. You have such an interesting mix of titles here! I l especially loved 10 and 16, but 13 and 19 scare me. Can’t wait to see which number comes up on Monday…

  16. Good luck on Monday! Rebecca and The Count of Monte Cristo are two of my favourite classics and I also loved The Handmaid’s Tale. I hope you get a book you enjoy!

  17. It looks like you have some great titles in your spin list. I have read Alice in Wonderland, Frankenstein and Emma. I probably enjoyed Frankenstein the most because it really surprises you. Is there anything you are really excited about reading? Good luck with the spin!

  18. I have read several from your list. Their Eyes were watching God I read recently and is wonderful, I love Rebecca and Frankenstein which I have read four times. The Handmaid’s Tale I read many years ago – and thoroughly enjoyed it.

  19. What an interesting list! Lots of great titles, here. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of my absolute favorite books. And the Harry Potter series which, of course, starts with Sorcerer’s Stone, is my favorite series ever. Have you read it previously, or will this be your first time?

Frankenstein is interesting, though not what I expected. For Whom the Bell Tolls is really good, though not my favorite Hemingway. I really enjoyed Robinson Crusoe, much more than I expected to, and The Handmaid’s Tale is great. Dante’s Inferno is BRILLIANT but difficult. Some of these others I haven’t read yet but are definitely on my “someday” list. Rebecca seems to make every single one of my “to read” lists, then I never actually read it. And I’m saving Emma for later this summer, for the Austen in August event.

Good luck! Hope the Spin goes in your favor! I’m sure we’re all really hoping for one or two particular books on our lists to be chosen. πŸ˜‰

  20. Very nice spin list. I have read a few of those – The Handmaid’s Tale, which I think is Atwood at her best, and For Whom the Bell Tolls, which I read in March and was pleasantly surprised after having heard all this talk about how Hemingway’s style of writing can be.. let’s say, plain πŸ™‚ But For Whom the Bell Tolls had such hidden charms! I also have Rebecca in my spin list (kind of hoping it gets chosen, it’s been talked about a lot and I am curious about this book). Good luck! πŸ™‚

  21. Nice list πŸ˜€ I’m so excited for this spin. I’m a total nerd. I’ve read some of the books on your list (6 or so) and a lot of them are on my CC list. I hope we get a good number!

  22. I have read Rebecca and Harry Potter. I liked them both but Harry Potter was definitely an easier read. Rebecca was a little tough for me to get through but it turned out good in the end. A lot of the books to read on your list are on mine as well πŸ™‚ It feels like the list to read gets longer then the list of already read. Problems of a book nerd I guess πŸ˜€

  23. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to ‘spin’ this time or not… I probably should though. I had to comment though, because I just finished ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ and just loved it. So I hope that number comes up for you!!

  24. I haven’t read any of the books on your list. But we do have some in CC titles in common! Good luck with your # πŸ™‚
